When it comes to the economic, social and politic collaboration needed to develop renewable energy from the ocean, Oregon is a model for other states, accirding to state Sen. Betsy Johnson.

The Scappoose Democrat spoke to participants at an Ocean Renewable Energy Conference Wednesday.

“The Oregon Coast is not only ready for the future, its citizens are shaping the future,” Johnson said.

Johnson was the keynote speaker during the two-day conference at the Seaside Civic and Convention Center, which brought industry, university and environmental representatives together to discuss the future of ocean energy resources. Participants came from all over the United States and as far away as Norway and Scotland.

The chairwoman of the Oregon Legislature’s “Coastal Caucus,” Johnson said Oregon is positioning itself as a leader in developing ocean renewable energy resources. But, she added, “We’re doing it the Oregon way.”

That way, she said, is through collaboration among industry representatives, researchers and fishermen.
